Does Dark Skin Need SPF? Why Daily Sun Protection Matters for Melanin-Rich Skin

It is one of the most persistent myths in skincare: darker skin doesn't need sunscreen. Melanin does offer some natural protection, but nowhere near enough to prevent sun damage. And if you are working on dark marks or uneven tone, skipping SPF can quietly undo weeks of effort.

Why it matters more than you might think

  • Dark marks get darker. UV light stimulates pigment, so marks left by blemishes or irritation can deepen and last longer on unprotected skin.

  • New patches appear. Regular, unprotected sun exposure is a common cause of uneven patches on the cheeks and forehead.

  • Firmness and texture change over time. Sun exposure breaks down collagen, which shows later as lines and loss of firmness.

  • UV reaches you indoors and on cloudy days. UVA passes through clouds and window glass, so a grey British morning still counts.

How to choose an SPF you will actually wear

  • Look for broad spectrum, SPF 30 or higher.

  • Avoid a white cast with a tinted, gel or chemical-filter formula, and try it on your jawline first.

  • Use enough: about two finger-lengths for face and neck.

  • Apply it as the last step of your morning routine, and reapply if you are outdoors for long periods.

SPF and your brightening ritual

Brightening products help fade the look of dark marks; SPF stops new ones forming and old ones darkening. They work as a pair, which is why every Ekeau brightening ritual ends with the same step: wear SPF every morning.
